HP dm4 3000ea Notebook review

HPs Pavilion range was never going to offer the same wow factor as its premium Envy line and we couldnt pick out its previous dm4 Pavilion in a line up. But HPs new dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition is far from anonymous.

HP dm4-3000ea Notebook review
Thanks to the ubiquity of Beats Audio technology, HP has decided to give its non-descript dm4 Pavilion a chassis overhaul and specs update. That upgrade does bump up the price to £849, so its not the very best value for money, but the Beats redesign is a success for various reasons. It looks super-modern without being too cool for school, enjoys a solid feel for a 14-inch multimedia portable and – most importantly – it sounds absolutely fantastic.

Punching above its weight

Despite its slinky dimensions (338 x 225 x 32 mm), the dm4-3000ea is fairly heavy. A weight of 2kg for such a small chassis is surprising, but every component – including the great backlit keyboard – feels robust and well-made (although its not the solid mag-alloy chassis that HP puts in its Envy laptops; just serviceable plastic here).

The board marries the same soft red and matte black hues that adorns the case. The Beats logo also sits front and centre, which could annoy, but the font design is so nice it actually really works.

It can be hard to type on dinkier laptops keyboards, but the dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition is the exception to the rule . It felt much better than the first dm4 Pavilion board and has isolated chiclet keys with a solid bounce.

HP has also binned the miniature navigation keys, making it fine to use for long periods for multi-tasking and browsing online. Our only bone of contention was the unresponsive touch tech on the trackpad which is still a novelty.

HP also gets bonus points for adding one of the better in-built webcams available.
The 14-inch display is powered by 1366 x 768 LED-backlit BrightView screen, which works perfectly well in most brightness conditions. Its not over-glossy and coped admirably with the darker hues of The Dark Knight. We also had no problems streaming high-definition video content. Clearly, the HP dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition wont have any problems performing most multimedia tasks.

HP also gets bonus points for adding one of the better in-built webcams available. Thanks to the TrueVision low-light tech, it managed to pick us out accurately enough in murky lighting.

Under the hood

The rest of the specs under the hood are decent enough to make sure HPs dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition didnt suffer any staccato playback – even on number crunching apps.

HP has bundled a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5-2450M processor, a 500GB SATA hard drive and 4GB of memory with space for two more sticks if you fancy an upgrade. That should be enough oomph to boot the OS from cold in no time at all… but, irritatingly, HP has added the usual bloatware gubbins to slow everything down. That said, some of the pre-loaded software, like Norton and Windows Office Starter Edition is actually useful.

Performance in our lab tests produced steady if unspectacular results, especially when you consider the power available from that Intel Core i5 chip. A score of 5629 in our processor benchmarks means that its more than adept at multitasking, but it does seem low when compared with laptops such as the Packard Bell TS11 which achieved better lab tests.

Graphics were equally unspectacular, and we also got a mid-range score of 5622 in our 3D Mark tests. This is enough for light gaming, thanks to 1GB of dedicated graphics on its AMD Radeon HD 7470M GPU. Just dont expect to get anything out of Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3, though.

The 174-minute battery life using Battery Eater Pros Readers Test was pretty good – especially when you bear in mind that it has a 6-cell battery.
So, the question remains, how do you get enjoy audio fidelity on such a small laptop? The simple answer is to plug in decent headphones and bypass the traditionally tinny laptop speakers.

If youre not a fan of headphones, a more permanent solution is to upgrade to superior audio components.

While the Beats audio results good, you still cant been hooking up a decent set of speakers. That said, for audio on the go, the dm4-3000ea Pavilion Beats Edition comes highly recommended – and HP even throws in a pair of Dr Dres Solo headphones as part of the package.

Overall the HP dm4-3000sa is a capable portable laptop, for those who want style while theyre on the move. Admittedly, its not packed with power, and there are lighter machines for the money, but the Beats credentials give it cool credibility that will attract students and younger users.

Anyone who does invest will be rewarded with a solid performer capable of work and play on the move, but those with demanding needs will want to look at portables backed up by a bit more grunt.

LG wants the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 1 terminated

LG wants the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 terminated
When Samsung came swinging with allegations of OLED patent infringements and corporate theft, LG promptly counter-sued. Samsung then escalated by broadening its list of patent complaints, forcing LG to do what any dignified electronics brawler would have to do: file for a retaliatory injunction against the "sale, manufacture and importation" of one of Sammys products.

The device at stake today is the unsuspecting Galaxy Note 10.1, which has no direct rival among LGs current product range but which is claimed to have breached three LG display patents concerning the improvement of viewing angles.

For its part, Samsung is dismissing the attack as "unjustified" and doesnt seem overly concerned by LGs demand for damages -- nothing less than a billion won ($1 million) for each day the Note 10.1 continues to be made and sold.

GSM Remote Test phase 1

Today i completed the DTMF decoding circuit and interface it to the micro controller and DTMF tone was generated by the PC and fed to the decoder. After all the connections i wrote a test code for micro controller to get the decoded signal. With an interrupt i manage to get the decoded values from the tone generated.
To view what i am getting i connected the LCD and found some problems and after a while i menage to fix it. from the flow you can see how it works. Then i have to test this from a mobile phone and for that i need to make a small preamplifier to control the volume.

How Modem Software Problems occurs

How Modem Software Problems occurs?
Problems with modem communications often are caused by software. If both parties are not using the same settings, the software can be used to change the settings so that they match. Both parties do not have to use the same software to communicate. Some common problems are:

Not being able to connect to the other computer.
Connecting but receiving garbage.
Connecting but getting random characters in addition to the "real" data.
Connecting but seeing dropped or missing characters.
Getting two characters for every one you are keying.
Not being able to see what you are typing.

We will discuss each of these issues in turn.
Inability to Connect

If you are not able to connect to the other computer, check to see that both modems are communicating at the same speed. The communication software may be forcing one of the modems to connect at a given speed with the command:
&Nx
The value x is between 0 and 9. The &Nx command tells the modem what speed to connect with another modem. Setting the modem with &N0 allows the modem to determine what the highest possible connect speed is and uses that speed to connect. Using commands other than &N0, such as &N2, forces the modem to connect only at one speed. See the table below for various forced connect speeds.

Command Connect Rate
&N0 Variable
&N1 300 bps
&N2 1200 bps
&N3 2400 bps
&N4 4800 bps
&N5 7200 bps
&N6 9600 bps
&N7 12 Kbps
&N8 14.4 Kbps
&N9 16.8 Kbps
If the modem is set to a forced speed, try setting the modem to the variable connection rate and reconnecting. If that does not work, try connecting to a different service or modem and see if the problem persists. If you can connect to other computers, you know the trouble is at the other end of the line.

Receiving Garbage

If you can connect, but get garbled characters on the screen, check to see that both modems are set for the same number of data bits. If the data bits are set correctly, consider a line noise problem. Use a different telephone line and see if the problem repeats itself.

Receiving Random Characters

If you can connect, but you are getting random characters on the screen in addition to the "real" data, consider the following

Is there a telephone extension on the line you are using? If so, did someone pick up the extension?
Is the modem in question an external modem? If so, is the modem cable near a fluorescent light or some other source of EMI?
Is the terminal emulation set properly?
Consider a line noise problem.

Dropped or Missing Characters

If you can connect, but are seeing dropped or missing characters, consider the following:
There may be a flow control or handshaking problem between your computer and the modem. Check the cabling for good connections and try another cable of the appropriate type.
There may be a problem with the UART chip on your serial port. Try setting your modem to communicate at a slower speed or replace the current UART with a 16550 model.
There may be an interrupt latency problem. Attempt to establish the communication link with as few open programs as possible.

Double Characters/No Characters

Echo on/off can cause you to not see messages on the screen or to see double characters for everything you type. Local echo causes the modem to repeat back every character it receives. This feature makes the text you type appear on the screen. If the computer you are connected to has "remote echo" enabled, its modem repeats every character it receives. If both local echo and remote echo are enabled, you will see every character that you type twice. This problem is corrected by turning local echo off.

If the software you are using does not support a local echo option, try using "full-duplex" as a substitute for echo off. Conversely, you may use half-duplex as a substitute for echo on. Some software packages have mistakenly used the term duplex in place of local echo options. Duplexing refers to data transmission being limited to transmitting and receiving as single tasks, or simultaneous two-way transmissions.
If you are connected but cannot see what you are typing, the other computer does not have remote echo enabled, and your local echo is not enabled. To correct the problem, turn local echo on.
