CNETs download.com is a popular website so you might not think twice about clicking the Download Now button, but take a closer look.

Downloading and installing looks so simple and easy but its often anything but.

Do you really want to install random third party apps?

Once again, hover your mouse over each button/link and see where it points to. If its a DoubleClick ad or anything similar, then move on to the next one. In this case, the second download button with a right-facing arrow directs us to a URL with the words "ARCHOS-101-XS-Tablet-Firmware-412-Download" contained within. Thats the one were looking for.

Scan for Malware

Once youve finally found and downloaded the file youre looking for, be sure to scan it for malware, especially if you grabbed it from a site youve never heard of. Use any on-demand scanners you have installed (such as a daily AV program and/or Malewarebytes), and also upload the file to VirusTotal, a free cloud-based service that analyzes suspicious files and URLs for dirty code.

UPDATE: I got some email that say this fix slows down outlook when starting, that is because outlook wants to start messenger when it starts, the easiest and fastest way to disable messenger and still have a quickj starttime with outlook is to rename the exe file, located here c:program filesmessengermsmsgs.exe, to something other than msmsgs.exe, such as msmsgsnew.exe.

How Modem Software Problems occurs?
Problems with modem communications often are caused by software. If both parties are not using the same settings, the software can be used to change the settings so that they match. Both parties do not have to use the same software to communicate. Some common problems are:

Not being able to connect to the other computer.
Connecting but receiving garbage.
Connecting but getting random characters in addition to the "real" data.
Connecting but seeing dropped or missing characters.
Getting two characters for every one you are keying.
Not being able to see what you are typing.

We will discuss each of these issues in turn.
Inability to Connect

If you are not able to connect to the other computer, check to see that both modems are communicating at the same speed. The communication software may be forcing one of the modems to connect at a given speed with the command:
&Nx
The value x is between 0 and 9. The &Nx command tells the modem what speed to connect with another modem. Setting the modem with &N0 allows the modem to determine what the highest possible connect speed is and uses that speed to connect. Using commands other than &N0, such as &N2, forces the modem to connect only at one speed. See the table below for various forced connect speeds.

If the modem is set to a forced speed, try setting the modem to the variable connection rate and reconnecting. If that does not work, try connecting to a different service or modem and see if the problem persists. If you can connect to other computers, you know the trouble is at the other end of the line.

Receiving Garbage

If you can connect, but get garbled characters on the screen, check to see that both modems are set for the same number of data bits. If the data bits are set correctly, consider a line noise problem. Use a different telephone line and see if the problem repeats itself.

Receiving Random Characters

If you can connect, but you are getting random characters on the screen in addition to the "real" data, consider the following

Is there a telephone extension on the line you are using? If so, did someone pick up the extension?
Is the modem in question an external modem? If so, is the modem cable near a fluorescent light or some other source of EMI?
Is the terminal emulation set properly?
Consider a line noise problem.

Dropped or Missing Characters

If you can connect, but are seeing dropped or missing characters, consider the following:
There may be a flow control or handshaking problem between your computer and the modem. Check the cabling for good connections and try another cable of the appropriate type.
There may be a problem with the UART chip on your serial port. Try setting your modem to communicate at a slower speed or replace the current UART with a 16550 model.
There may be an interrupt latency problem. Attempt to establish the communication link with as few open programs as possible.

Double Characters/No Characters

Echo on/off can cause you to not see messages on the screen or to see double characters for everything you type. Local echo causes the modem to repeat back every character it receives. This feature makes the text you type appear on the screen. If the computer you are connected to has "remote echo" enabled, its modem repeats every character it receives. If both local echo and remote echo are enabled, you will see every character that you type twice. This problem is corrected by turning local echo off.

If the software you are using does not support a local echo option, try using "full-duplex" as a substitute for echo off. Conversely, you may use half-duplex as a substitute for echo on. Some software packages have mistakenly used the term duplex in place of local echo options. Duplexing refers to data transmission being limited to transmitting and receiving as single tasks, or simultaneous two-way transmissions.
If you are connected but cannot see what you are typing, the other computer does not have remote echo enabled, and your local echo is not enabled. To correct the problem, turn local echo on.

How to Set up and Use Internet Connection Sharing XP

With Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows XP, you can connect one computer to the Internet, then share the Internet service with several computers in a home or small office network. The Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP Professional will automatically provide all of the network settings you need to share one Internet connection with all the computers in the network. Each computer can use different programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express as if they were directly connected to the Internet.

You shouldnt use this feature in an existing network with Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or a system that is configured for static IP addresses.


Enabling ICS

The ICS host computer needs two network connections. The local area network connection, will be automatically created upon installing a network adapter, connects to the computers on your home or small office network. The other connection, which uses 56k modem, ISDN, DSL, or cable modem, connects the home or small office network to the Internet. You need to ensure that ICS is enabled on the connection that has the Internet access. By doing so, the shared connection can connect your home or small office network to the Internet, and users outside your network are not at risk of receiving inappropriate addresses from your network.
When you enable ICS, the local area network connection to the home or small office network will be given a new static IP address and configuration. Consequently, TCP/IP connections established among any home or small office computer and the ICS host computer at the time of enabling ICS are lost and need to be reestablished. For example, if Internet Explorer is trying to connect to a Web site when Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, refresh the browser to reestablish the connection. You must configure client machines on your home or small office network so TCP/IP on the local area connection will be assigned an ip address automatically. Home or small office network users should configure Internet options for Internet Connection Sharing. To enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Discovery and Control on Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, run the Network Setup Wizard from the CD or floppy disk on these computers. For ICS Discovery and Control to work on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition computers, Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later version must be installed.

To enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network

you must be logged on to your computer with an owner account in order to complete this procedure.
Open Network Connections. (Click Start followed by Control Panel, and then double–click Network Connections.)

Click the local area network, dial–up, PPPoE, or VPN connection you want to share, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

On the Advanced tab section, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection check box.
If you want this type of connection to dial automatically when another computer on your home or small office network attempts to access external resources, select the Establish a dial–up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet check box.

If you want other network users to have access to the shared Internet connection, select the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection check box.

Below the Internet Connection Sharing selection, in Home networking connection, select any adapter that connects the computer sharing its Internet connection to the other computers on your network. The Home networking connection is only present when two or more network adapters are installed on the computer.


To configure Internet options on your client computers for Internet Connection Sharing

Open Internet Explorer. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.)

This head-scratcher dates back as far as I can remember, and even Windows 7 hasnt fully resolved the issue. Its usually the result of a communication problem between the computer and the printer, and the culprit could be anything from a corrupted driver to a faulty USB cable to a wonky network setting (if youre using a network-connected printer).

Fortunately, you can send stuck print jobs packing. Download and run the Stalled Printer Repair app, which serves the singular (and singularly awesome) function of purging stuck print jobs from the queue. Purging them means those documents will never reach your printer--but after you resolve the issue, you can just send them again.

There are many reasons why you might want to format a hard drive, including a clean installation of Windows to get rid of a virus or malware, because you’re giving the drive to someone else, or throwing it away.

Here, we’ll explain everything you need to know to get the job done properly. What you’ll need to format the hard drive depends on a few things, such as whether it’s your only hard disk and if you have a spare PC or not.

You can’t, for example, format the hard drive on which Windows is running. In order to format the disk and reinstall Windows (or another operating system), you’ll need to boot your computer from a Windows installation disc, a USB flash drive or another bootable disc.

Formatting is the process of deleting all the data on the hard drive, but beware of ‘Quick Format’, which leaves all your data in place and makes the drive appear to be empty. A quick format is okay if you have a brand new hard drive, or you want to reinstall Windows, but not if you’re disposing of the disk.

A word of warning: make sure you have successfully backed up any photos, videos, music and other documents from your drive before you format it. Although files can be recovered in some situations, prevention is always better than cure.

Partitions

It’s important to understand about partitions before you start. A hard drive’s storage can be divided up into smaller sections, called partitions. It’s possible to format one partition while leaving the others untouched. While that’s useful in certain situations, if you want to format the entire hard drive and use the entire capacity in one block, you’ll also need to delete the partition information.

Windows Vista, 7 and 8 have a built-in Disk Management tool, but the fastest way to format a hard drive is to click the Start button, then Computer and right-click on the hard drive you want to wipe (you can’t format the drive on which Windows is running for obvious reasons). Choose Format… from the menu and a new window will appear with a few formatting options.

By default Quick Format is checked, and you can choose the file system and allocation unit size, as well as changing the volume label (the drive’s name). Typically, you can leave all settings unchanged and click the Start button. In under a minute your hard drive will be formatted. You should choose NTFS as the file system if it isn’t already selected for Windows Vista, 7 or 8.

Windows’ Disk Management

Type diskmgmt.msc into the search box in Vista or Windows 7 and then click on the only result that appears in the menu above, with the same name. This is the easiest way to launch Disk Management, but you’ll also find it in the Control Panel if you search for ‘disk’ or look under the Administrative tools section, where it’s called ‘Create and format hard disk partitions’.

Disk Management isn’t as powerful as a standalone partition management tool, but it’s still useful. When you install a new (additional) hard drive in your PC, you might wonder why it doesn’t appear in Windows Explorer. The reason is because it needs to be initialised and formatted – you can do this in Disk Management.

When the tool loads, it will analyse all your computer’s drives and will prompt you to initialise a new disk that it finds. If your disk is larger than 2TB, you should opt for GPT (GUID Partition Table). This setting also lets you create more than four partitions.

If you don’t see a prompt, look in the list of drives and you should see one that says ‘Not Initialized’. Right-click on it and choose Initialize Disk. Once that’s done, right-click in the hatched Unallocated space and select New Simple Volume. Follow the instructions, choosing how big you want the partition to be (in MB – 1024MB = 1GB), and which drive letter you want (one will be chosen, but you can opt to change it if you wish).

When you come to format the partition, our advice is the same as in the Quick Format section. If you select a size for the partition that’s smaller than the total capacity of the drive, say 500GB on a 1TB drive, you’ll end up with some unallocated space on the drive that you can format by repeating the process you’ve just completed.

Changing a partition’s size

You can use Disk Management to expand or shrink a partition. Right-click on one and choose the appropriate option from the menu that appears. If shrinking, the partition will be checked to find out how much empty space it contains.

It’s a little confusing as the numbers are displayed in MB rather than GB,but you can adjust the amount of space to shrink and the ‘Total size after shrink’ will be updated. You can’t shrink a partition beyond the point where files are located – you may be able to free up space by defragmenting the drive first. Conversely, you can only expand a partition if there’s unused space on the drive. If not, the option will be greyedout.

In this age of hyper-parenting, queuing up and applying to pre-schools, one would expect How Children Succeed to be a book full of stories about tiger-moms and their high achieving scions. Refreshingly, this is a book about the students and families struggling to get out of poverty.

We get a smattering of mention of various studies, culminating in an introduction to the Tools of the Mind program. Strangely enough, my affluent neighborhood is full of Kumion cram schools as well as Montessori specialty kindergartens, but nobody brags about their Tools of the Mind curriculum. Its very likely that the tools of self-discipline, planning, and taking action is cultivated by upper middle class households as a matter of course, though one would think that something like Tools of the Mind would be useful no matter which strata of society you come from.

We dont get any expositions of music prodigies (thank goodness!), but instead get a long chapter about one teachers attempt to successfully teach her disadvantaged kids to play chess and beat the upper class private schools in competition. Its a mesmerizing read, and worth your time. The punchline is that she coaches one of her star chess players on academics and absolutely fails to make a dent, showing you that success in one aspect of life doesnt get you far anywhere else.

Does this book teach you something you dont already know? Not really. Its a typical English major book, lacking pointers to studies as well as deep interviews with people who explore the development of executive function in children. But its worth reading anyway. Recommended.
