Review Grand Pursuit The Story of Economic Genius

Ill admit it. Im an economics junkie, and enjoy even reading books like Minskys Stabilizing an Unstable Economy. So I was excited when Sylvia Nasar of "A Beautiful Mind" tackled the history of great economic minds in Grand Pursuit.

By far the biggest disappointment is that with only limited space and spanning this much time, Nasar could only grant superficial coverage of many of the ideas. I was even more annoyed when she insisted on wasting precious pages on boring genealogy details rather than the big ideas of the man.

That said, Nasar does a passable job of describing economic history. Her description of Karl Marx as a person whod never bothered to learn English despite writing his book there, and who never even visited a single factory to do his work. Several not very well known economists are covered, including Alfred Marshall, Beatrice Webb, and Joan Robinson. Strangely enough, she never talks about Adam Smith except in passing.

By the time we get to the greats like Schumpeter, Keynes, Friedman, and Samuelson, the repeated mini-biographies are starting to wear thin. However, this is where the action starts, so I was quite perked up. I learned quite a bit more about Keynes that I didnt know before. Nasar also "gets" Keynes, though she doesnt quite take the pains to explain why Keynes General Theory was widely misunderstood, even more so than say, Einsteins.

The war years are covered in great detail, though big breakthroughs (like Irving Fishers realization of the relationship between interest rate, the business cycle, and inflation) dont quite get the headline attention they deserve: sometimes you feel as though Nasar is more interested in Keynes bi-sexuality than in his ideas.

What does come across to me as brand new information is the section on Hayek. For instance, he and Keynes were friends and supported each others work. Hayek is definitely not the libertarian that his later followers make him out to be, and Nasar delights in pointing that out, especially when Republicans tried to court him and get his approval.

Ultimately, while the book was worth reading for me, I wonder how many non-economics junkies will be able to keep their eyes open during the long diversions. Not really recommended.

Increase BROADBAND Internet connection Speed

  1. Make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
  2. Start - run - type gpedit.msc
  3. Expand the "local computer policy" branch
  4. Expand the "administrative templates" branch
  5. Expand the "network branch"
  6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
  7. In right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
  8. On setting tab check the "enabled" item
  9. It says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0

Effect is immediate on some systems, some need to re-boot. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, programs can request up to 20% of the bandwidth be reserved for them, even with QoS disabled, this is no big deal and most programs do not request it. So, although QOS has caused a big stink because people think it reserves 20% of their bandwidth, you can still disable it

Why More RAM is Better

Why More RAM is Better ?

Smoother multitasking
Like to have your charts and e-mail, too? Do you open several programs at the same time and switch between them frequently — and does your current PC moan and groan when you do? Then a memory upgrade is essential for smooth, effortless multitasking. It gives your computer an extra boost so it doesnt have to use the hard drive to manage data.

Faster Web surfing
Are you a surf-aholic? If you like to spend countless hours on the Internet, but dont like when your system slows to a crawl, youll want to add RAM. No matter how fast your Internet connection is, a memory upgrade can help your browser display pages faster. When your computer can store more data in RAM, it has to swap out less memory to the hard drive. Web sites use rotating banners, Flash and Shockwave animation, streaming audio and other plug-ins as dazzling effects to entice visitors. A computer memory upgrade can give your computer the zip it needs for todays browsing.

Enhanced printing
Do you print large files like presentations with photos, clip art, graphics and charts? Are you tired of your pokey printer? A printing bottleneck can be fixed easily with a simple memory upgrade. And the boost in performance can have a big impact on productivity, especially in a networked environment where several PCs may be sharing one printer.
A printer memory upgrade effects both quality and speed. The quality will improve because additional memory allows you to print better at higher resolutions. And youll be able to print faster because a printer buffers (or holds data temporarily) part of a print job before actually printing. The more memory you have the more that can be buffered, and the faster you will print. (Note: Not all printers are upgradable. Check your owners manual for details.)

More efficient video editing
If the video-editing bug has bitten, youll want to add RAM. Editing is fun — or can be if its not too slow. Because video files are very large, youll not only need a big hard drive to store the file, but a quick processor and lots of RAM help speed things up. Video editing software like iMovie and Adobe Premiere typically recommend 64MB of RAM, but once again, more is better. 256MB or more should have you editing without waiting for your computers hard drive to catch up.

Optimized Windows XP processing
Microsofts Windows XP is power-packed with enhanced multimedia, gaming and Internet capabilities. Its touted as faster, easier to use and better for remote computing. Whats not to like? So take full advantage of all the incredible features by optimizing the performance with a RAM upgrade.

Windows XP ready-labeled computers must meet minimum hardware requirements for the software. But meeting these requirements does not ensure the system is configured for maximum performance with Windows XP. Typically, just meeting minimum requirements for software means minimum performance. Like before: more is better. Youll need at least 128MB, but 256MB is recommended. For the optimal Windows XP experience load up on RAM.

Spectacular gaming
A new graphics card is nice, but it isnt enough for todays cutting edge gaming. Revolutionize your 3D gaming experience by adding more memory. Added RAM supports color at higher resolutions and gives you the power for enhanced 3D rendering, with amazing character realism and texture versatility. Enjoy crisper, brighter images and excitingly fast 3D video and animation for a powerful, virtually real gaming experience.

Enhanced multimedia presentations
Intense graphics use and memory-laden programs, such as multimedia, publishing and graphics arts, demand more RAM for the optimal computing experience. Flash and ROM take up a lot of space. Youre going to need at least 128MB, with 256MB or more needed for best performance. Once again, more is better. The applications respond much quicker with faster image drawing.

Efficient networking
A memory upgrade is essential for efficient networking. The server as well as individual PCs can be upgraded to lend more benefits for everyone.

Disk boot failure

How to overcome Disk boot failure.

This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities.

  1. Boot options are not set properly in CMOS
  2. Non bootable CD or CD-R in computer
  3. All boot devices set are not bootable

Boot options are not set properly in CMOS

Verify that the boot options within CMOS are set properly. Below is an example of how we recommend the boot options be set. Floppy drive

  1. CD-ROM drive
  2. Hard Drive
  3. Other / Network

Non-bootable CD, CD-R, DVD or other disc in computer

Verify that no CD, CD-R, DVD, or other disc is in the computer possibly causing the computer to attempt to boot from that disc.

All boot devices set are not bootable

If all of the above recommendations have been attempted and you encounter the same issue it is likely that the computer is not detecting any devices in the computer that are bootable. Attempt to boot from a bootable floppy disk.

If you are unable to boot from a known bootable floppy diskette, ensure that the floppy drive is properly setup. Once you are able to boot from a bootable floppy diskette, ensure that the hard disk drive is able to be read.

How to remove the MSN Messenger service from XP

Want to remove MSN Messenger?

Locate SYSOC.INF in the WindowsINF folder (hidden file and folder), Open it in Notepad and locate the line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

Remove the word "hide" from the line and save the file. You will now have an entry in add/remove programs.)

OR (XP Pro Only) leaves it installed, but tell Windows to never let it run. If youre running XP Professional, you can use GPEDIT.MSC to prevent Messenger from loading. Otherwise, even disabling it in startup wont cause it to "always" not run.

NOTE: Outlook, Outlook Express and some Microsoft web pages can still make it load.

· Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC

· Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Messenger

· You can now modify whether it starts initially and/or whether its to run at all.

UPDATE: I got some email that say this fix slows down outlook when starting, that is because outlook wants to start messenger when it starts, the easiest and fastest way to disable messenger and still have a quickj starttime with outlook is to rename the exe file, located here c:program filesmessengermsmsgs.exe, to something other than msmsgs.exe, such as msmsgsnew.exe.

Review Cure Your Child With Food

Cure Your Child With Food is a book about nutrition and the impact nutrition has on childrens health and growth. Its an interesting book in that its organized with each chapter meant to be read independently, which leads to a lot of repetition.

For instance, my impression of the first half of the book is that shes a one-trick pony. She seemed to have only two solutions for the patients who come to her: get rid of the diary in the diet, and ditch the gluten. Get rid of the American "white diet". Thats it.

The second half of the book, however, does demonstrate that she doesnt just prescribe one thing for all patients. For instance, one patient came to her with sleep problems and an otherwise healthy diet. Getting her onto 0.5mg of melatonin supplement an hour before bedtime meant she could sleep through the night. She explains why melatonin is a good solution and why it is not addictive. Another patient came to her from a vegetarian background with muscular development issues. Adding choline and fish oil to his diet resolved his issues. She does caution that sometime fish oil by itself isnt enough and that other forms of intervention are required. She diagnosed one case of a patient ingesting pesticide from fruit.

She presents interesting theories about why theres been a recent rise in gluten sensitivity (not the same as celiac disease): the amount of gluten in wheat that has been harvested has gone up, due to "improved breeding" and other interventions. She also explains why she recommends fish oil supplements over just adding more fish to the diet: the risk of mercury poisoning.

While the book is wordy and repetitive, I found it useful in thinking about childrens nutrition. For instance, once you take your kid off infant formula, you should think about where his Omega-3 is going to come from. In our case, it was more palliative than anything else, but its not quite a "one trick pony" book that the first half of the book presents itself to be. Recommended.

My Next PC Will Be Home Built

My 3 year-old HP m9600t is now starting to be flakey. 3 years is about the usual amount of time it takes for a desktop to die, but the nice thing about owning a PC (versus a Mac), is that you can usually reuse components over time, provided you didnt buy a proprietary machine and build your own. Since the machine is still mostly working, I can leisurely pick over components, etc., and buy stuff as they come on sale. However, Im happy to use my blog as a platform to shop for components. My suspicion is that Ill be able to keep my existing HDDs, and video card (Radeon 4850), though it would be nice if the machine gave me an upgrade path. Here are my priorities:
  1. Fast enough to handle lightroom and video editing.
  2. Quiet. This means large fans running at low speed.
  3. Power efficient. No more desktop PC behaving like a space heater.
Requirements:
  • Must have hot-swappable hard drive bays. I would like to have 4 hard drive bays, though I could live with just 2 if necessary.
  • Must be easy to work on. No more pinching my fingers to install memory or hard drives.
  • Plenty of USB slots (USB 3?).
  • Room for upgradability
  • Must drive my 27" monitor together with my 24" monitor.
  • Reliable. Im not willing to put up with flakey BIOS and such.
Nice to haves:
  • Built in memory card readers for SD cards and CF.
  • High quality sound.
  • Blu-ray
Non goals: small. Im ok with a big monster. Gaming is a lower priority than absolutely raw power needed to make Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere Elements fly. I guess mostly what Im looking for is motherboard, case, fans, power supply recommendations. Its easy for me to shop for CPUs, memories, and HDDs myself. I look forward to recommendations from my social network. (No recommendations for Apple products need apply)

AMD Radeon 7970

AMD Radeon is releasing its latest and greatest GPU on January 9, 2012. There is already many reviews out for it, and its worth checking out more than one to get a good sense of how fast and powerful this $550 card really is.

But, in my humble opinion, this is probably the best review Ive seen yet. It goes over the architecture in extreme detail but also makes it understandable, and then in the benchmarking they are extremely thorough. They are using a new way to represent GPU power that I have not seen anywhere else, where they actually record frame render times, which gives a good indication of any stutters you might experience in a game, even if you have a high average framerate.

Read it here: Tech Reports 7970 Review

Update: Jan 9/2012

Independent Cycle Touring featured in the Mercury News Oakland Tribue

Several weeks ago, I was interviewed for a cycling article that appeared last Sunday in the Mercury News/Oakland Tribune. I had other things occupying my mind on Sunday, so didnt get around to reading it today.

As far as free publicity goes, its pretty good: the article mentioned my web-site, and plugged my three favorite cycling clubs in the Bay Area. As for effectiveness: I did not sell a single copy of Independent Cycle Touring as a result, reflecting that mass media is not a good way to launch a very niche publication, as you might expect.

Nevertheless, the article does quote me, so Ive used up my quota of 15 minutes of fame for the rest of my life.

Quantifying the Apple Tax

The last time I was a Mac user was in 2009 when I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mk 2 and got rid of my Mac Mini as being too slow to run Lightroom. Before 2006, I was a PC user and never bothered paying the Apple tax. It wasnt until I joined Quark Games, which was a mostly Mac shop that I ran into the Apple tax again.

The Apple tax impacts small development shops. Large corporations  like Adobe or Google arent cash constrained. In fact,  at Google, most developers wouldnt even be aware of the Apple tax because most of their computation is done in the cloud. At a small shop like Quark, however, we are cash constrained and most of our computation is done locally, at the developers desk.

Most of Apples desktops are incredibly under-powered. For instance, the iMacs dont even let you replace a hard drive, which means that you have to pay Apples incredible markup for SSDs, and in the case of the smaller iMacs, you cant even upgrade the memory yourself. For a developer workstation that potentially needs more than one SSDs, this is unacceptable. Yes, you can upgrade to a 3.4 GHz Core i7, but thats even more expensive than a Mac Pro and you end up with a machine you cannot upgrade.

Then theres the Mac Pro. Its mid-2013, and they cost $2500. Whats worse, is that they use a 2009 Xeon CPU which under-performs my 2008 home desktop! And that machine cost me $1200 back in 2008! You can compare it with a current Dell with the latest Haswell i7-4770 processor. That machine would cost $750, with twice the processing power of the Mac Pro! Sure, the Mac Pro has a nicer case which makes it easier to upgrade. And it has ECC RAM (for all the good thatll do you --- I cant remember a single instance where I wanted ECC RAM for any of my development needs). The fact is, Apple has no mid-range towers, but if you need to deliver iOS applications to your customers you have no choice: you have to buy an Apple product. Yes, Im aware Apple has a new Mac Pro at the end of the year. However, the new machine has no room for hard drive expansion at all, so I might as well buy an iMac!

At Quark, our solution has been to buy the 13 inch non-Retina Macbook Pros. With a couple of screwdrivers you can take those apart and upgrade the memory and hard drive. Unfortunately, when you need to process a lot of art and music assets, the CPUs on those machines bog down. Even then, using Macbook Pros save you because when we bought our Mac Pros, we could take the hard drives out of the laptops and stuff them into the desktops and get immediate productivity gains, without the pain of reinstalling all our software and losing a day in the process.

Whats amusing to me is that the art team tells me that the rest of the industry has gone to Windows PCs for 3D-modeling and other art needs precisely to escape the Apple tax (and these despite Apples reputation as the go-to computer for artists!). So its only engineering thats stuck paying the Apple tax. Certainly, if Android were too crush iOS devices, small development shops will be the first to switch sides completely just to avoid paying the Apple tax, which stands at $1700/developer. I know Ill be switching our art team over at the next available opportunity. In the mid-1990s, I dreamed of the days when wed escape the Microsoft hegemony. But now that weve largely escaped its clear the Apple overlords are much worse than the Microsoft ones ever were.

Firefox 6 0 Review

From: PcMag

Pros
Minimalist user interface. Panorama tab group organizes sites. Excellent standards support. Cool bookmark organization with Panorama. Pinned sites for all-the-time access. Syncing for tabs, history, passwords and more. Graphics hardware acceleration. Cross-platform.
Cons
Update breaks some extensions. Still trails Chrome and IE9 on some benchmarks. Lacks client-side tracking protection like that of IE9. Lacks Chromes built in Flash, PDF reader, and Instant page view. Trails Chrome in HTML5 support. No new-tab page helpers. Slower startup than Chrome and IE9.
Bottom Line
Firefox remains a lean, fast, customizable browser that can hold its own against any competitor, especially with its graphics hardware acceleration. The version number bump doesnt mean what it used to though, with no major user feature adds from version 5 to 6.

Firefox 6, the latest web browser version from the open-source Mozilla Foundation, brings very little that end users will notice—the big interface changes all came along in version 4. With Firefox 5, Mozilla started emulating Googles Chrome (free, 4.5 stars) Web browser in more than just JavaScript speed and minimalist interface, as competitors Internet Explorer 9 (free, 4 stars) and Opera 11 (free, 4 stars) have. The open-source organization even adopted the mammoth search companys rapid version-release pace, and Firefox 5 was the first fruits of this approach. A new Firefox version will now come out every 6–12 weeks, and only features and fixes that are ready will make the cut.

That doesnt mean Firefox 6 is an insignificant update: A look at the change log shows a whopping 1,300 bug fixes (which includes feature and developer tooling adds). Some may notice that, like Chrome, Web addresses now have the site domain name in a darker font than the rest of the extraneous parts of the address. They may notice faster startup time if they have a bunch of Panorama tabs loaded. In addition to the changes noted above, the latest version includes a new site-specific privacy settings page, which you can access by typing about:permissions. The site identity area on the left side of a Web pages address has also been slightly redesigned.

The vast majority of whats new in Firefox 6, however, will be of greatest interest to developers. Chief among these are support for the latest version of WebSockets, which allows sites to perform bidirectional communication with a server; EventSource, for server-sent data—(i.e., push); Scratchpad, an interactive JavaScript prototyping environment; and (something astute end users may see) more options in the Web Developer menu from the main Firefox button (including the Scratchpad). Version 5s foremost adds were support for HTML5 CSS transitions, and a more visible Do Not Track choice. Mozilla made the anti-tracking option more prominent in Firefox 5, and claims its the first cross-platform browser to include such a feature. But keep in mind, all it does is set a header entry telling sites you dont wish to be tracked, so its up to the trackers to abide by your wishes. IE9s corresponding feature, by contrast, actually blocks the tracking on your end.

Firefox can nearly match Chrome on JavaScript speed, even currently beating it in 3D graphics acceleration, holds its own when it comes to HTML5 support, and offers a trimmed down interface that gives the Web page center stage. But when you hold it side-by-side with Chrome, Firefox falls just a bit short in terms of HTML5 support and whiz-bang features like Chrome Instant, which loads pages from your history before you even finish typing their addresses or search terms in the address bar.

Install
A simple 13MB download gets you the Firefox 6 installer. When you run it youll lose your old version of Firefox, so make sure youre ready to say goodbye to 4.0 (we hardly knew ye). The latest Firefox is available for Mac and Linux as well as for Windows 7, Vista, and XP—the last of which even Internet Explorer 9 (Free, 4 stars) cant claim. You can import bookmarks from any other installed browsers on first run, but setup is nearly as uncomplicated as it is for Chrome. Firefox also now makes it easy to choose a search provider other than Google, but surprisingly, not as easy as Chrome does.

Its more likely that youll be updated to version 6 automatically, though, since, starting with version 4, Firefox followed Google Chrome in yet another way: by automatically checking for and downloading each new version, and installing it the next time the browser starts. This has the benefit of keeping the majority of users on the latest version.

One downside to updating, however, is that some add-ons (particularly 3rd-party extensions) wont be compatible with the new version. I ran into this with two of my installed extensions (Java and Skype), and I dont have a huge amount installed. At least Mozilla has put into place a system for automatically re-enabling your add-ons once theyre updated. This phenomenon to this set of users in the form of a discussion group, the browser maker has made it clear that the vast audience of individual Web users is their priority, not corporations.

Interface
Firefoxs latest interface brings it in line with the trend of "less is more"—less space taken up by the browser frame and controls and more space for Web pages. The page tabs have moved above the address bar, and, as with Opera 11 (Free, 4 stars), theres just a single menu option in the form of the orange Firefox button at top left. You can re-enable the standard menus by hitting the Alt key. The Home button has moved to the right of the search bar, and a bookmark button appears to the right of that. That bookmark button only appears when you dont want the bookmark toolbar taking up browser window space. This gives you one-click access to frequently needed Web addresses. But I wish that, like IEs star button, it also let you see recent page history. You can still call up the full bookmark manager, which lets you do things like importing bookmarks from other browsers, search, and organize.

Firefox is one of the last remaining browsers to still use separate address and search boxes, which is good for those who like to keep those two activities separate. That doesnt mean, however, that a search wont work in the address bar, aka the "awesome bar." That tool, which drops down suggestions from your history and favorites whenever you start typing, was pioneered by Firefox and copied by all other browsers. The Firefox version now adds a new twist: When one of its suggested sites is already open in a tab, you can click on a "Switch to tab" link, preventing you from unnecessarily opening more tabs unnecessarily—a useful tweak.

Panorama and Pinned Tabs
With version 4, Firefox brought a revolutionary new way to organize tabs. Dubbed "Panorama," this feature helps those who like to have lots of tabs open. Just click the Mondrian icon all the way to the top-right of the window, and youll see rectangles containing page thumbnails. You can drag tabs between groups, and resize and move the group boxes themselves around. You can even give a name to a tab group to keep organized.

When you click on a page thumbnail in any tab group, that page will maximize in the browser window, and youll only see tabs from its group. It takes a bit of a rethinking, as you wont see all of your pages tabs, but a click of the group icon gets you to them. I only wish that Panorama had some automation of the group creation, similar to IEs color grouping of tabs. And unlike Operas nifty stacked-tabs, Firefoxs groups are a click away on their own page, rather than always in front of you.

Another tab-related feature seems clearly Chrome-inspired—pinned tabs. If there are sites you always want access to, just as in Chrome, you can pin their tabs to the left side of the tab bar. These pinned tabs appear narrower, showing just the site icon. The pinned sites will also load automatically when you start Firefox. But you cant create an app shortcut icon for use on your desktop or Windows 7 taskbar, as you can with IE9 and Chrome.

Firefox Sync
Chrome and Opera have had bookmark and settings syncing for a while, but Firefox does an excellent job at implementing this on-the-go convenience. Not only will Firefox sync bookmarks and settings, but it also opens tabs, history, passwords, and forms. The data is encrypted locally so that no one can intercept those passwords while theyre on their way to Mozillas servers. The setup creates a key that you need to enter into the other PCs you want to keep in sync; the process isnt arduous, but its not as simple as Chromes sign in. One thing you cant sync in Firefox that you can in Chrome, though—surprisingly—is extensions. Themes, are another, but Chrome cant sync History or open tabs. IE9 has yet to offer any syncing option. Im still occasionally amazed to see the same page I was viewing at work 45 minutes ago magically waiting for me on my home copy of Firefox. Version 6 improves discoverability of Sync by adding a Learn More link to the Add Bookmark and Remember Password dialogs.

Add-ons (aka Extensions)
Since version 4, add-ons (which includes third-party extensions) have been revamped inside and out in Firefox. The Jetpack add-on system is both easier for developers to create extensions and easier for consumers to use them. JetPack makes it possible for an extension developer not to require a restart to install the add-on and to make updating less intrusive. Jetpack could save me a lot of frustration when I just want to get browsing. But I still found that even in version 6, a lot of extensions still required a restart, and the frequent browser updates increase chances for incompatible extensions whose creators havent updated their code for every Firefox update.

Interface-wise, in another nod to Chrome, Firefoxs add-ons manager now resides in what looks like a Web page. In its present form, its a little harder to simply find the most popular extensions and their ratings, but you can still head to the Mozilla Web page for this. Firefox is still customizable in appearance, too, thanks to Personas and Themes.

Amazons Kindle Fire update brings the best of both worlds to the Fire HD and HDX

Amazon doesnt want to just be known as your entertainment portal--it wants to be your everything portal. The company hopes to continue to instill that vibe with the latest software update for its Android-based tablet line. Fire OS 3.1 begins rolling out Monday to Kindle Fire HD and Fire HDX devices, bringing with it a few new features, like enterprise support and wireless printing to turn your existing Kindle into more than just a destination for ebooks and video. The update also beefs up the last-generation Kindle Fire HD with some of the HDXs marquee features.

BYOD, finally
For Amazon to make its tablets a be-all, end-all device for consumers, it needed to cater to the business crowd, too. The device now includes better enterprise support with features like the ability to connect to secure Wi-Fi networks and log on to a corporate network via VPN. Fire OS 3.1 also supports Kerberos authentication for more secure browsing of your companys internal Intranet through the Silk browser, as well as a Kindle-specific device management API to make life easier on your IT department.

See what your friends are reading
Amazon aims to be more friendly with the integrated Goodreads social network for book lovers. The service lets you connect with friends to share things like your favorite quotes, what youre currently reading, and what you thought of the books youve read. You can also import every book youve ever bought or read through Amazon into your Goodreads account and sign up for a daily or weekly newsletter that offers suggestions on whats new to read in your favorite genres.

Share your screen with your TV
As if the Amazon Video app on almost every set-top box out there wasnt enough, the bundled Second Screen feature is now supported for the older Kindle Fire HD. Second Screen lets you "fling" movies from your Kindle to your television set through supported third-party devices. Amazon writes that the feature is meant to free up your device so that you can use it for apps like X-Ray or browsing the Web--a definite ploy to get you to always use the device when youre thinking of entertainment in your living room. The feature is currently limited to the PlayStation 3 and compatible Samsung TVs, though Amazon writes that it will be available later this year for the just-released PlayStation 4.

Other miscellaneous features in Fire OS 3.1 include things like wireless printing and voice dictation to convert your speech into text. Voice dictation is available in all languages when youre connected to a network, though only English is available offline.

If many of the new features sound familiar, thats because Amazon is taking a page out of the iOS/Android playbook to make its tablet lineup more attractive to those who want something more than just a content consumption device. You can pick up the update by heading into the Settings panel, Device, and then checking to see if there is a System update available, or by visiting Amazons official software updates page.
